Far, far away in the distant past, last Wednesday, liberals went cuckoo for Coco Puffs on social media after a report surfaced that “Mark Wahlberg was paid 1,500 times more than his fellow actress Michelle Williams,” for reshoots in the movie “All the Money in the World.” How ironic. Over the weekend, Wahlberg donated his $1.5 million salary from the reshoots to #Time’sUp. What wasn’t widely reported is that Williams offered to do the reshoots for free! Dumb move on her part.
Wahlberg and Williams were reshooting scenes for the movie because actor Kevin Spacey was kicked to the curb as lead actor and replaced with actor Christopher Plummer, after numerous victims came forward accusing the star of the hit NetFlix series “House of Cards” of sexual misconduct. Amongst his apparent victims was “Star Trek” actor Anthony Rapp, who alleged Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward him when Rapp was just 14 years old. Spacey was 26 at the time, and he did not deny the accusations.
Lately, the left has began to conflate the #MeToo movement, which focuses on sexual harassment, with the #TimesUp movement, which focuses on whatever the heck left-wing feminists feel at any given moment, including an alleged pay gap that exist between men and women in the workplace. However, the #TimesUp activists are dishonest in their premise. Although I’m sure it wouldn’t be difficult to find examples where women are paid less than men in certain positions, what’s often ignored are the reasons why, which frankly have nothing to do with men.
For example, Michelle Williams volunteered to waive her fee for the reshoots that were shot over the Thanksgiving break. According to CBS News, she was paid an “$80 per diem that totaled less than $1,000.” Whose fault is that?! Hers. Here’s what the hypocritical actress told USA Today about the reshoots before the controversy emerged: “I said I’d be wherever they needed me. And they could have my holiday, whatever they wanted. Because I appreciated so much that they were making this massive effort.”
Did you catch that? No one asked her to work for minimum wage; she virtually asked to do so. She’s not alone, however. For whatever reason, men tend to be better at negotiating salaries than women. Case in point: My wife holds a Master’s degree in a respectable field. On two separate occasions she came home after landing a good job, and when I asked her how much her starting salary was, she replied “I didn’t ask.” What?! I couldn’t begin to fathom that. To her credit, she wouldn’t do that again.
Here’s the issue, Mark Wahlberg knew his value; Williams did not. Truth be told, Wahlberg wasn’t always worth the pay he gets today. He had to build his resume and his name recognition! Sorry, Michelle Williams, you’re no Meryl Streep, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Emma Stone, Glenn Close, Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, Madea (aka Tyler Perry) or Anne Hathaway. Get the point?! That isn’t to say Williams isn’t a good actress, but she’ll be worth more after she does more. Let’s be honest: Who’s piling into a movie theater to see a film starring Michelle Williams today? No hands? Anyone? Anyone?
However, if Williams felt she was worth more for her participation in the reshoots, she should’ve asked for more dough. In this #MeToo era, I’m sure she would’ve gotten what she demanded.
Secondly, generally speaking, more men value STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers where they can make lots of money to provide for their families, as opposed to women who will often enter college for a career they love and can be proud of such as social work, education, counseling, nursing, etc. Women value making an impact; men value making a bonus. Again, I’m speaking generally.
Thirdly, more men are able to fill trade jobs that require lots of physicality most women simply cannot handle – jobs like masonry, roofing, plumbing, construction, mining, etc. Men in these fields tend to work lots of overtime hours as well. I know this is difficult to understand in a politically correct world, but there are some jobs women can’t do because they don’t have the physical stamina to. Yet, men are labeled sexists for identifying the obvious.
Lastly, women not only have babies, but they tend to want to spend time with their babies once they do. And who can blame them? This isn’t a bad thing! It’s natural! Of course, women who occupy the same position as a male co-worker are going to make less when they take more time off to be with their child, and rightfully so.
In closing, let me be emphatically clear. Any woman that creates the same value for a company as a man should be paid equally. If she creates more value, she should be paid more. And truth be told, most women are.
